June 2024: Letter from the Director

Updated: Jun 11

While watching a game show recently, I learned that the verb “to advocate" is derived from the Latin word advocare meaning “to add a voice" or “to call/summon aid”. Naturally, this sparked my reflection on SARA’s advocacy work. Since the 1970s, SARA advocates have worked to amplify survivors’ voices, in hopes that their experiences are heard, validated, and addressed.

This month, we honor the resilience and courage of the LGBTQ+ community, members of which are often at the forefront of the anti-violence movement. Since before the Stonewall Riots in 1969 to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic, to the ongoing need for safe schools for LGBTQ+ youth and transgender rights, each step forward is achieved when collective voices demand change. Let us celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month by honoring the progress made, and the trailblazers, while acknowledging the vital work still ahead.

Advocacy is not just about adding one voice; it is about creating a chorus of diverse voices and lifting us all toward meaningful change. Together, we will continue to break down barriers, challenge injustices, and build a safer, more empathetic community. Thank you for your dedication to SARA and to survivors.

With gratitude,
Bass Wolf Executive Director
