Incarcerated Survivors

All survivors of sexual violence deserve support and healing. Many of our community members within the correctional system are impacted by the trauma, resulting from sexual violence. In response, SARA provides vital support to these survivors.

SARA partners with 3 agencies: Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, and Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention.

Challenges survivors face in prisons, jails, and correctional facilities:

  • Limited resources: Survivors who are incarcerated can not use the internet, and have less access to people and materials that can help them process, find healing, and explore their options.
  • Lack of control: Being incarcerated significantly limits the choices survivors can make. Regaining a sense of control is a paramount aspect of healing for all survivors and is difficult to have in a confinement setting.

Support Services for Incarcerated Survivors

SARA’s free services for incarcerated survivors include the following:

  • Confidential hotline for survivors to get emotional support, information about making Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) reports, and more
  • Accompaniment at the hospital when a prisoner is there for a sexual assault evidence collection exam
  • A mail program that provides resources, recommendations, and referrals

Education Programs for Incarcerated Populations

SARA facilitates education programs at Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center, Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, and Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.
